About SF Jing Mo

Spirit, dedication, discipline.

Long ago, Jing Mo was started in Shanghai, China in March 1910, and the credit is given to the Chinese hero Fawk Yuen Gap (Ho Yuan Chia in Mandarin), who unfortunately passed away soon after in October 1910 from an illness. Many schools using the Jing Mo name have proliferated across the entire world, some connected with the main organization in Shanghai, others not.

Note that the name"Jing Mo" is the Cantonese rendering, and it might also be spelled "Ching Mo." If people were to give the school a mandarin name, then they might called it "Jing Wu," or "Ching Wu." The spelling in the English language does not seem to be totally consistent, so we mention this just to dispel confusion.

The Jing Mo Athletic Association was first brought to San Francisco in the early 1960's by Grandmaster Wong Jack Man (photo shown on the left). The school was also called" The Chinese Physical Culture Association." Grandmaster Wong is widely known among martial artists all over the world. From the early 1960's to 1978, Grandmaster Wong taught martial arts in San Francisco's Chinatown, his main gung-fu school located for many years at Pacific Avenue. A large black sign with white Chinese calligraphy saying"Jing Mo Tai Yook Woey" hung above the entrance. The characters were written from right to left in the old Chinese style. He instructed students in the arts of Hsing-I, Tai Chi, Northern Shaolin, and various other styles of northern martial arts. Grandmaster Wong Jack Man is famous for being the man who fought Bruce Lee in a match in Oakland in 1964 which has since gained mythic proportion in martial arts history. It is known that Sifu Wong Jack Man went to work at the Jackson Cafe the day following the fight and continued to improve his own style of martial arts, as did Sifu Lee.

Today, SF Jing Mo is a non-profit organization led by Sifu Rick L "Bucky" Wing, an acknowledged disciple of Grandmaster Wong Jack Man. Jing Mo is quite different from any other school. We embrace all styles of kung fu and teach Northern Shaolin, Southern Shaolin, Northern Praying Mantis, Ba Qua, Tai Chi, Hsing Yi and many weapons from many styles.

Morals & Philosphy

Jing Mo encourages all students to practice good morals and ethics in all facets of life. Kung fu is only to be used for self-defense or in defense of ones that are unable to. We should always treat each other with consideration and respect.

We believe the best way of winning a fight is to avoid one; fighting is always a last resort. We are dedicated to providing our students with the best opportunites and knoweldge so that they may grow to their full potential of mind and body through the learning and practice of Kung Fu.

It is important to find a school that you feel will fit in and the decision should not be taken lightly. You should take the time to visit multiple schools to see which ones fit your interest and personality.
